CDP News: Sept. 23, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We officially said good-bye to summer this week, but this fall is looking like it’s going to be plenty busy as well.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we presented a training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy via Second Life. These events are always a lot of fun. We’re happy to be able to reach so many providers who otherwise may not be able to attend a CDP event. Registration for our next online event is also currently available. The topic will be suicide prevention training on 12-13 October.

This week also featured the latest CDP Presents webinar. Guest speaker Dr. Craig Bryan led a talk on “Brief Interventions for Suicidal Military Personnel and Veterans”. If you missed it, don’t worry! We’ll be posting a link to a recording of this event in the CDP Presents section of our website.  While you’re there, you can check our previous editions of CDP Presents. Also, don’t forget to sign up for next month’s event. Dr. Kimberly Copeland and Dr. Marjorie Weinstock will present “Opioid Use Disorders in Military-Connected Patients: An Overview of Current Trends and Treatment.” As with most CDP Presents events, those who attend the webinar and complete a short post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible to receive one free Continuing Education (CE) credit.

If you’re looking for in-person events, we’ve got a couple of excellent options coming up. First, the Rocky Mountain Regional Civilian 1-Week Training program will be held in Denver, CO from 24-28 October.  We also just opened registration for the one-week training event in Charleston, South Carolina, which will run from 5-9 December.  These events are the perfect opportunity for those interested in working with a military population or for anyone looking to increase their skills. Registration for either event is $95 and comes with 34 CE credits. Head over to the event pages for more details on the individual events.

The CDP is proud to announce that we have opened up registration for the 2017 iteration of The Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career. This five-day program for third- or fourth-year doctoral students is designed to raise awareness of military psychology careers and increase students’ competitiveness for military internships. Participants will receive training by CDP faculty and other subject matter experts. For more information or to apply for this program, please click here.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Carin Lefkowitz entitled “Coping in Our Post-9/11 World – Part 1, Personal Life”. Dr. Lefkowitz looks at the changes in the world in the 15 years since 9/11. She discusses how she and her colleagues have changed their world view and attitudes. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s all for this week. Get out there and enjoy the last official weekend of summer! We’ll see everyone right back here on Monday for another entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
