Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) is a nationwide training and referral program built by a unique collaboration between community, academic, and military partners whose mission is to meet the unique behavioral health needs of military-connected individuals by expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based behavioral health treatment for service members, veterans, and their families. SBHP focuses on National Guard members and their families who often experience gaps in mental health resources and services.
To achieve its mission, SBHP trains community-based civilian behavioral health providers to better understand the military experience and to work with service members, veterans, and their families. The program offers different levels or tiers of training that must be taken sequentially, with each building on the other. Most trainings are delivered virtually to increase provider access.
Once trained, licensed clinicians at the Master’s level or higher may join the public online SBHP directory. This directory enables clinicians to be located by prospective military-connected clients directly or to receive referrals from other professionals (e.g., primary care doctors, nurses, chaplains, behavioral health officers) wanting to connect military-connected clients with a trained therapist in their area.
