CDP News: Oct. 21, 2016
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re back after a bit of a break and we’ve got plenty to talk about!
It was a very busy week here as we had numerous training events going on. We had two separate sessions, one on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and one on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression, at RAF Lakenheath in the U.K. It’s always very exciting to reach those outside our normal audiences, especially overseas. We also had events going on domestically. On Wednesday and Thursday, we were in Macon, GA, as part of the Star Behavioral Health Program. We also presented a CPT training at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, just down the road in Virginia.
We held our latest CDP Presents webinar on Tuesday. The topic was “Opioid Use Disorders in Military-Connected Patients”. This event was led by Dr. Marjorie Weinstock and Dr. Kimberly Copeland. If you missed it, don’t worry! We’ll be posting a recording of the webinar in the CDP Presents section of our website. Registration is currently available for the next CDP Presents session, which will be held 6 December, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The topic will be “Use of Mobile Applications in Clinical Practice with Service Members and Veterans.” As usual, participants who attend and complete a short post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible for one free CE unit. This one should be a very interesting topic, so we encourage you to sign up today!
Also in the virtual realm, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be holding our first ever University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) in an online environment on 4 November. This program is designed to address the social, cultural, clinical, and campus-specific concerns of Service members and Veterans. It’s intended for both clinical and non-clinical campus personnel. This program has been very well-received in the past and we’re happy to be able to offer it to a wider audience via the online medium. Head over to the event page for more information or to sign up.
We’ll be in Denver all next week for the Rocky Mountain Regional Civilian 1-Week Training program. While online registration has closed for this event, if you’re interested in attending, you can contact Ms. Chris Myers for information about on-site registration. Online registration is ongoing for the one-week training event in Charleston, South Carolina, which will run from 5-9 December. These events are the perfect opportunity for those interested in working with a military population or for anyone looking to increase their skills. Registration for either event is $95 and comes with 34 CE credits. Head over to the event pages for more details on the individual events.
This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Caitlin Cook entitled “Military Couples – Challenges and Survival Strategies”. Dr. Cook talks about her own experiences, as well as those of others, as she examines the myriad difficulties faced by couples in the military. She also shares some helpful tips to overcome these hurdles. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.
