CDP News: Feb. 12, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’ve got another long weekend coming up, but first let’s look at this week’s events.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we presented a training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life. It was a great event led by Dr. Matt Sacks and Dr. Kimberly Copland. We’ve got lots more online training events coming up as well! This Tuesday, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST, Dr. Diana Dolan will present “An Introduction to Chronic Pain in the Military and the Role of Behavioral Health Providers”, as part of the monthly CDP Presents webinar series. Next month is Brain Injury Awareness month and to help spotlight this, we will be presenting a webinar entitled “Psychological Consequences of Brain Injury and Implication for Treatment in Service Members and Veterans.” This training will be presented by guest speakers Dr. Johanna Wolf and Dr. Jenelle Anthony on 15 March. As with most of our CDP Presents events, participants who attend and complete a post-event evaluation and survey will be eligible for one free CE for each of the upcoming webinars.

We also opened registration this week for our next two-day online CPT training via Second Life. It will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 23-24 March. This event sold out last time around and we expect this one to reach capacity very quickly. If you would like to be notified of future online events via email, please complete the form here.

If you prefer face-to-face training, we’ve got you covered as well! Check out our upcoming Regional Civilian One-Week Training 21-25 March, in Long Beach, CA. It’s $95 for five full days of instruction on a variety of military- and deployment-related topics. For a specific agenda, other information on this program or to register, please click here. We’re getting close to filling up on this popular event, so if you’re interested, sign up soon! If you can’t make it to that one, our next iteration will be 4-8 April in Des Moines, IA. We plan on opening registration for this event soon. To sign up for more information about this program, click here.

We’re back on the road next week as well. On Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be headed to Columbia, SC to present another training for the Star Behavioral Health Providers program. This multi-state initiative seeks to increase the number and availability of trained behavioral health providers. To learn more about this program or to see if it’s available in your state, visit the SBHP section of our website. On Thursday, we will also be delivering the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) training in Fort Worth, TX at Tarrant County College.

In the CDP Blog this week, we looked at a recent study that suggests concussions may be even more dangerous than previously known. According to the research, even a single concussion can dramatically increase an individual’s risk for suicide in the future. Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and has a happy President’s Day on Monday. We’ll see you back here next week!
