CDP News: Aug. 19, 2016
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Happy Friday to everyone out there! Before we head to the weekend, we’ve got a bit more work to do, so let’s get right to it.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we held our latest online training in Second Life. It was a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training. It was very well attended and we’re always glad to see so many people taking advantage of our online events. Registration open for our online Prolonged Exposure (PE) training on 20-21 September. Next week, we’ll also be opening sign-ups for a training on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) on 14-15 September. Both of these events will be held in Second Life as well.
Next Tuesday is our next CDP Presents webinar, “Helping Military Couples Enhance Connection After Deployment”. This webinar will be led by Dr. April Thompson on from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. As with most of our CDPP events, participants who attend and complete a short post-course evaluation/survey will be eligible to receive one free CE. In keeping with the theme of suicide prevention, next month’s CDP Presents will focus on that topic and will take place on 21 September.
In addition to our online events, we’ve also got plenty of face-to-face training events coming up. Our Regional 1-Week Civilian Program is a great opportunity for those working with a military population or interested in getting started doing so. This program offers a variety of training topics held over five days in cities around the country. We’ve got the next five locations tentatively scheduled through summer of 2017. First up will be Denver, CO. We’ll be there 24-28 October. After that we’re headed to Charleston, SC 5-9 December. For a list of the remaining locations, head over the our 1-Week Training page to check out the future cities on our list.
This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Marjorie Weinstock, entitled “Behavioral Activation – There’s an App for That”. As technology become more and more a part of our everyday lives, there is an increasing comfort level, in both clients and behavioral health providers, in using smartphones as a part of treatment. Dr. Weinstock looks at the Mood Coach app, developed by the VA’s National Center for PTSD. She also discusses Behavioral Activation itself and talks about its usage and goals. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.
That’s all for this time around. We’ll be back on Monday with a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column. As always, if there’s anything you’d like to see in this space, reach out and let us know!
